This past Saturday, the WBC light middleweight championship bout between the current youngest champion in boxing (37-0-1) Saul Alvarez and European champ Ryan Rhodes (45-5) was held in Jalisco Mexico, Alvarez's hometown. In a fight that was one sided from the opening bell, it was all Alvarez. The young red haired Mexican was in firm control all the way through without ever being tested in the fight.
Round 1 through 12 & all the rounds in between looked virtually the same, with Saul throwing punches & Rhodes standing there in a defensive shell more or less through the entire fight. Rhodes had a chance to show he could hang in there wit the firey red head but admitted after the fight that Alvarez was just too much for him. Rhodes called Alvarez a superstar in the sport.
I personally think a great fight for mexico and boxing period, would be Alvarez vs Alfredo Angulo. They wouldnt even have to leave mexico, plus I think that could be a fight that really would test both of the young mexican warriors, and give the one that wins the fight that push he needs to really make a statement for his career. Miguel Cotto, Julio Ceser Chavez jr are all potential fights that could be made for Alvarez, but to me the time is now for young Saul to fight someone who's really going to try to win the fight and not looking to just survive.
Having potential is good, but "potenial" itself doesnt pay the bills. At some point you have to capatilize off it and lets hope that young Saul starts doing just that with his next opponent.
